Goals for October 2017
I made it through September! I don’t know about you, but September always feels like such a month of transition for me. New schedules, new season, new latte offerings at Starbucks…
In all seriousness, as much as I enjoy being busy, I am happy to have the month behind me for some time to catch my breath. Lots of great things happened so before I set some goals for the coming month, I wanted to look at what I accomplished.
Take up a new cycling sport
As serious as I was about this at the time, with the USARA National Championships looming, I simply had to put cyclocross to the side and focus on my mountain biking. I am not saying it won’t make its way back on my list, but I am not pressuring it with a timeline at this point.
Compete in a brand new race style
I competed in my very first Otillo-style event and had a blast. Swim-Run is definitely something I want to do more of. You can read more about the race here if you missed it.
Complete the USARA National Championships
I can’t believe this was already over a week ago. I will have an account of the race from the lens of a first-time racer from my teammate, Ed Cyr shortly.
Get all of the details sorted around the new property
Well, I certainly don’t have all the details sorted around the transaction. It closes this month and I still have a few things to iron out with insurance and the lawyers but the majority of the big pieces are in place.
Focus on family time
I love these people.
Ok. What’s up this month?
Celebrating someone pretty dang important
This tall glass of water is having a birthday this month and also is celebrating 2 years of calling me his plus one. I am planning the appropriate social activities with friends to commemorate this.
You’re alright, Cullen. Perhaps your greatest downside is how small your calves are.
Start a new blog series
I have been thinking about doing another blog series for a while and have planned out an 8 part series that I will be rolling out this coming month. Stay tuned – it features some really inspiring athletes I can’t wait to introduce you to.
Start a new mentoring project
I have been working with a local university in a program they have for marketing professionals and I will be joining them as a coach in public relations. I don’t talk a lot about my day job on here but public relations and communications are something that I am just as stoked about as athletics so this is going to be a really fun experience.
Run a 5 KM
I know I said I was done for the year but the RunWaterloo Fall Classic 5 KM is such a fun fall experience and really, I don’t have a good excuse not to other than the fact that am not fit for fast races at the moment…training for 30 hour races and an Ironman doesn’t necessary finesse that engine. I’m perfectly healthy, I am just missing that top gear. So I am planning to go out there with a pain smile on my face and have a good solid effort and call it a fun workout. Because we all know how well that always goes…
That’s all for October, friends! I’ll see you back in a month to check in on how it went.

Aw Jess I loved this catch-up! I’ve been horrendous at blog reading lately and feel like I’m missing some major events happening in your life – bad friend award for moi! But seriously, all this is awesome, and it sounds like you’ve got so many fun things planned for October. Enjoy celebrating your “tall glass of water” (you crack me up!) and tell him he better compete more frequently in the Pizzalympics so he can put some size on those calves! 😉

Thanks Angela. I think all in all, it’s time for us to plan another Skype date! Being horrendous at blog reading means you have a lot on the go and that is never a bad thing. 🙂
